Increase Access for Injured Workers!

In June of 2007, New York State passed workers' compensation reforms to address the high cost of the workers’ compensation system and of prescription drugs. The unintended consequence was that the reforms allowed for the creation of a monopolistic system where insurance carriers can control and direct access to prescription medications for injured workers and where cost savings cannot be verified because the companies involved claim proprietary information. The pharmaceutical system became more expensive and it also left many injured workers out in the cold. Those injured on the job no longer could use the pharmacy of their choice but were forced to use the pharmacy mandated by their insurance carrier, with no options at all for medications if the insurance carrier contested the injured worker’s case. The system is broken and the most vulnerable are paying the price.
